Review of Fujifilm F100fd

Powerful resolution has been coupled with clever technology to provide a cracking budget compact camera
from Fujifilm.

There may be little point having 12-megapixel output from a small compact-sized sensor, but the new MkIII Fujifilm Super CCD HR chip has been designed in conjunction with clever digital processing, to compensate for inherent limitations of a compact design.

The end result is a picture that is remarkably free from noise, even in low-light conditions. The camera is packed full of clever features that allow it to extend its sensitivity range to ISO 12,800 by reducing the camera resolution to three-megapixels. Admittedly, controlling noise levels at this extreme setting is pretty poor, but it does allow you to take pictures in the near dark – which is mightily impressive.

The camera’s hardware also has plenty to shout about too – with a 5x optical zoom, and large 2.7 inch LCD screen, providing a clear and useable viewing area. Perhaps the most popular feature for the everyday user is Fuji’s ‘faster Face Detection’. This clever technology picks out the faces in a frame and ensures the focus and exposure are set to capture the subject, even if the face is off to the side of the image. Up to 10 faces can be monitored in a single image.

The F100fd is very well designed, and features a chic curved exterior that is far from dominated by complicated buttons. This ensures ease of use, also true of the menu system, which provides quick navigation and is clearly set out. Like many new compacts, this one uses the SDHC memory card format, but also offers an XD picture card slot, handy if you’re upgrading from an older Fujifilm compact. Picture quality is superb and the levels of colour tone are quite impressive. Images are vibrant and the focusing pin sharp.

Considering the price point, this camera is excellent value and positively packed with easy to use technology that will not only help improve your images, but also get you taking more pictures.
