New powerful diesel models join Astra line-up

Vauxhall have announced details of two new powerful 2.0 diesel Astra models, the Bi-Turbo hatch and Sports Tourer.

The 195PS Bi-turbocharged diesel engine has already been used in the larger insignia model and Astra GTC coupe, but here it sees its debut in Astra 5-door hatch and estate guises, which have also undergone recent styling revisions. The more purposeful  look includes a revised front grille, new front indicators and fog lamps, and updates to the boot and rear lights. Other features unique to Bi-Turbo models include 18” alloy wheels, twin rear exhausts, exterior styling pack and alloy sports pedals.

Vauxhall claim the BiTurbo hatch and Sports Tourer will reach 135mph and hit 60mph in under eight seconds, while also achieving a combined 55.4 mpg and emitting only 134g/km of CO2, thanks to a package of eco features – including standard Start/Stop.

The magic ingredients for the extra power are thanks to Vauxhall’s twin-sequential turbo system, which uses a bypass valve to transfer gases from the smaller turbo to the larger turbo, as revs increase. It’s claimed this ensures a smooth transition and eliminates any lag in power delivery. The utilisation of twin turbos also combine to produce 400Nm of torque, which should translate to both new Astra models having good driveability and strong mid-range acceleration.

Prices start from £24,095 for the Hatch and from £25,110 for the Sports Tourer, with first deliveries expected later in the year.
