Der neue Volkswagen Golf GTDVolkswagen has unveiled the seventh generation Golf GTD, ahead of its official Geneva Motor Show debut. The latest incarnation of VW’s potent diesel hatch promises ‘GTI performance’ coupled with typical diesel frugality.

Distinctive GTD exterior styling cues include smoked LED rear lights, chrome dual tailpipes, 17-inch alloy wheels, side skirts, and large roof spoiler. It also comes equipped with the same lower and firmer suspension found in petrol GTI models.

The sporty theme continues inside, with the GTD featuring tartan sports seats, a black rooflining, sports steering wheel and stainless steel pedals. A unique GTD-specific gear lever, instrument cluster and trim strips also feature.

Der neue Volkswagen Golf GTDEquipment levels are similar to GTI models, with refinements including white ambience lighting, ‘Climatronic’ climate control, Bluetooth telephony, front and rear parking sensors, and a winter pack comprising heated seats and headlight washers.

The GTD uses Volkswagen’s new EA288 2.0-litre four-cylinder common rail diesel engine, which is good for 181 bhp and 280lb ft of torque, available between 1750 and 3250rpm. This results in claimed performance figures of 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds and a 142 mph top speed – an improvement on the old model’s figures of 8.1 seconds and 138 mph. Economy has seen a boost too, with manual variants returning a claimed combined 67.3 mpg, while CO2emissions have tumbled down to 109g/km – 20g/km better than before.

Der neue Volkswagen Golf GTDThe new steel monocoque MQB platform, used in other VAG models – including the Audi A3 – benefits from increased rigidity and lightness, meaning handling should be sharper than in the previous GTD, while larger dimensions result in more interior space.

As before, a six-speed manual gearbox is standard, although a six-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission remains a cost option. UK sales are expected to start in April, with deliveries in the summer.
Pricing and specification is yet to be confirmed.

The seventh-generation Golf was unveiled in September of last year, with the range starting from
£16,285 (RRP OTR).
